Roses

The Mill Adelaide, Adelaide SA

Martinsen was drawn to capture the decay of a bunch of roses upon the death of her father. Visited daily, Martinsen's pastels of roses convey the strength of quiet observation and trust in her intuitive process as she processes loss, grief and letting go.

Central to Martinsen's enduring practice is her love for drawing from life. Flowers appear in her studio consistently, and inspire an ongoing relationship with observation and decay in her drawings. These themes are so resonant within her practice that flower drawings are an everlasting source of inspiration.

From these drawings it is clear to see that Martinsen considers herself a colourist though admits that’s mainly due to her interest in nature’s inherent beauty captured so brilliantly in the ongoing series of roses from her studio.
