Bodiness

Development of new work with theatre maker Erwin Maas (New York), and Performance with Alison Currie and Ian Dixon

"...that tangle of limited surrender is the human mire. We are sodden in bodiness." - Rumi

Building on the first ink drawings Martinsen made upon her diagnosis with MS, Bodiness is a performative new body of work about love, human connection & regeneration. The project uses Martinsen's experience of ‘otherness’ as disabled woman to tell a story that is universal. The project seeks to describe the ways in which ‘other’ is not less.

"People say to me ‘you are so much more than your body!’. What does that even mean, nay look like? Living with MS has taken an emotional & psychological toll, but all people see is the physical, the body. I have had to fight to keep my spirit alive. We are all much more than our flesh."

- Kirsty Martinsen

Martinsen's body of work seeks to explore the ways in which difference is a site for connection, the body is a site for potential, and process is a site for emotional/psychological/spiritual exploration.

Created with New York based theatre maker, Erwin Mass, this ambitious work uses techniques unique to her practice, and allows audiences to encounter new processes and new gestures of making art that have enabled Martinsen to continue to engage with her practice despite continual deterioration.
